EDGE OF YOUTH

EDGE OF YOUTH

Shimmering eyes that dreamt of a future

An unfettered by what-ifs and can not future

Mind that set out to be better

Mind that aspired to be more

Douse in hope, we came forth from our mother’s loins

With dreams we were certain can never be taken away

With light-feathered heart in the wind,

we knocked on the door of youth

Hoping it would open utopia

We were struck, crushed, bashed

Crushed by religion, struck down by tradition

Bashed by politics, held back by social beliefs

Tied down by culture

the wave of voices drowning us in can not

Choked by their version of should be

We were only sixteen

By twenty, we forgot the dream of innocence

As vices and social thrones cuts into our soul

We forgot what it meant to be sixteen

With eyes only for one thing, ourselves

On the back of rickety hope, we ride in complacency

Look! It’s still mid-morning

With determined steps before the setting horizon

A look over the shoulder,

That we may not forget the unbounded dream

That the dawn brings new hope

An unaltered mark in the sand of time

After all, we are only at the edge of our youth.
