THE GUN-POWER

Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centres of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.” —Robert F. Kennedy, Day of Affirmation Address

It has never been wrong to empower or arm a man for the protection of others, where he is willing and undertake to do so. But it becomes a crime where that same man begins to oppress or victimize those he is empowered to protect. The killings and molesting of unarmed civilians are worth raising voices against. It is distressing where unarmed individuals have experienced all sort of violence and violation by law enforcement personnel and nothing is done about it. Therefore, it raises the question of how secured are we in our homes or streets, if those we trust for protection begins to harm us. The truth is we cannot grow as a nation until we dismantle every form of violence in the society.

It only amounts to social injustice to treat equals as unequally and the unequal is treated equally. The life of every man is important and should be treated as such, irrespective of status. It goes from being bad to worse as we hear of every day killing or molestation of innocent civilians by those who are supposed to ensure their safety. Every human has a right to life as provided in the constitution (grundnorm) and to unjustly deprive anyone of that right is a slap on humanity and should not be ignored.

Reforming the institution would have been a better solution rather than putting an end to it, especially where it was created for a purpose. However, the truth is, of what use is an institution that no longer has the trust of the people it is meant to serve? The people deserve better.
